I would like to thank My Grandfather, Late Mr. Gopinath Kaushik, for if it wasn't for his genes and blessings, I don't think I would have ever been attracted to Urdu. It is a language that can be enthralling yet unimaginably complex at times. My writings are a way of saying things that I otherwise wouldn't be able to.
Some of the master Urdu poets that I deeply respect and learn from are Mirza Ghalib, Ustaad Zauq, Bahadurshah Zafar, Kaifi Azmi, Jaan Nisaar Akhtar, Majaz Lucknawi, Jigar Moradabadi and Sahir Ludhianvi and many more.
I'll be constantly updating this page on a regular basis with my work and work of famous Urdu Sho'ara.
This weekend, Nikhil and I finished composing one of our best songs so far and I, on the other hand, finished a Nazm that had been in my mind all this past week. I would like to dedicate this Nazm to all the down-trodden Women who put up with the daunting task of eking out [...]
Last night while trying to sleep I came up with a few words and by the time the tattered notepad’s page was full this evening, a Nazm was born. Since my last Ghazal in April, Akhiri Padaav – I haven’t been able to do much writing due to my travel to India and being extremely [...]
I started writing Jalpari last Friday, the day after I hurt my ankle and was working from home while on crutches. I reckon even in the pain, I found some solemnity and the idea for this song, which I finished the following day on Saturday. The music had been in my mind for a few [...]
Yesterday afternoon a fleeting verse paid a visit to the confines of my mind and this afternoon while dozing off, I tried to finish the Ghazal, which I’m presenting for you all. Hopefully, this won’t be as hard to understand as “Khudkushi Ke Baad“. The vocabulary is fairly simple. Comments/criticism are both welcome. I also [...]
While work has kept me busier than usual, I have been doing some reading – on both Spiritual and Poetic ends. A lot has happened since I wrote Khudkushi back in August last year. I have been admitted into Business School, wife of my brother’s high school friend committed suicide and so on. May be [...]
After a very long time, some verses descended upon me this afternoon and I was able to compose them in form of a short Ghazal. I think amongst Nazms and songs, Ghazals took the back seat somewhere along the line. Not to mention, it is much more draining to write a Ghazal. So, after Chale [...]
I’ve been doing some travelling in last 1 week or so, first to Yosemite Valley and then to the famous/infamous Winchester Mystery House. Amidst travelling, I sit down today and remember our beloved Mirza Ghalib on his 212th Birth Anniversary with this verse:
“लो हम मरीज़ ऐ इश्क के बीमारदार हैं
अच्छा अगर न हो तो मसीहा [...]
Haven’t really done any writing since A Maiden’s Story so thought of putting up a Nazm by Gulzar, which is short, but strikes a special chord every time I open my collection and read through it. I rate him as a master who can say something very poignant and mystic in very simple words. For [...]
Majaz (pronounced Majaaz), who is sometimes called the Keats of Urdu Poetry wrote Ghazals and Nazms that, if at once place speak of beauty and optimism and wit – create such a feeling of bitter despair that it leaves an ardent fan of Urdu Poetry like me and many others gasping for air. I have [...]
I wrote the first 4 lines of this Nazm last Saturday afternoon while doing some studying. It seemed more like my pen started writing all by itself. Next morning while sipping tea and watching the squirrels eat bread on my balcony, I picked up (or my pen did) from where I had left and ended [...]
