Lost his farm and family in Fall of ‘forty one
And he never knew he’d be on the run
Holding to his heart all he ever had
Searching for a place, oh under the sun
Stuck there on the highway in the summer rain
Longing for the faces he wouldn’t see again
He cried out to heavens like he’d never known
Though he was a cowboy, just couldn’t play the game
Lord, I never knew him, it sure makes me sigh
Day into the night, he lived high and dry
Oh then what’s the reason, folks like you and I
Say them rugged cowboys, oh they never cry
Back on to the highway where he stood in rain
I asked an old truckee if he knew the name
But they’d never heard of, he who’d come and gone
Yes, he was a cowboy, just couldn’t take the pain
Lord, I never knew him, it sure makes me sigh
Thinking how it feels when tears too run dry
Oh then what’s the reason, folks like you and I
Say them rugged cowboys, no, they never cry
Oh If I could only ever ask him why
He didn’t love another, why he didn’t try
Though it’s hard to know now, I won’t ever say
Lord them rugged cowboys, they don’t ever cry.
