My Rifle My Pony & Me

After my plan to Leh (roof of the world) was canceled, Nikhil and I are searching for a new location. Check out some of the photos from my recent trip to the Himalayas (Almora, Kausani, Bageshwar, Haidakhan, Mahavatar Babaji’s Cave path, and some other random clicks).Rains came yesterday night, which took away some of the scorching heat of the plains.

Meanwhile I recorded Dean Martin and Ricky Nelson’s rendition (from the movie Rio Bravo) of an old canyon favorite today, My Rifle My Pony and Me. This song has such a soothing effect that I kept singing it over and again. The words simply take you to wherever you wish to escape to.  The Alps, the Rockies, or for someone like me – deep in the Himalayan hills. Enjoy the first attempt.

Words:

Sun is sinking in the west
The cattle go down to the stream
The redwing settles in the nest
It’s time for a cowboy to dream

Purple light in the canyon
that is where I long to be
With my three good companions
just my rifle pony and me

Gonna hang my sombrero
on the limb of a tree
Coming home sweet my darling
just my rifle pony and me

Whippoorwill in the willow
sings a sweet melody
Riding to Amarillo
just my rifle pony and me

No more cows to be ropin’
No more strays will I see
’round the bend shell be waitin
For my rifle pony and me
For my rifle my pony and me.

I can smell the campfire and see the sun setting behind the mountains. Very nice.

I forgot to mention … when Ricky Nelson was young and appeared on his family’s TV show, “The Ozzie and Harriet” show, he was my favorite young comedian and singer.
