Jalpari
May 12th, 2009

I started writing Jalpari last Friday, the day after I hurt my ankle and was working from home while on crutches. I reckon even in the pain, I found some solemnity and the idea for this song, which I finished the following day on Saturday. The music had been in my mind for a few weeks, and each word just eased itself into the tune while I played the song on my Classical Guitar. This would be my first recorded song after A Maiden’s Story. I have been content with recent writings and I enjoy the drift in-between Urdu Poetry and Song-writing. May be soon, I’ll be back with another story.
The recording, I’m afraid is not so good this time. I took advantage of a work-from-home today and recorded it in a rush while my Manager was looking for me for a meeting
. I hope you all enjoy it and give feedback that always helps.
Interestingly, A Maiden’s Story was also written for a mystical maiden, and so is this one. Jalpari = Mermaid in English. Photo was taken by Nikhil during our Himalayan Sojourn in 2007. Here is the MP3.

Hi Gautam:
Just heard your Jalpari…It’s very good. First stanza had some “sur” problem and needs a little work…But very good effort, Beta. I love the guitar. your improvement with each posting has been commendable and I am very proud of you!! keep it up.

Gautam this is too good…One of your absolute best ones. Give me the MP3, I want to keep hearing it….The guitar just sounds too good and I love the overlapping vocals, you have to show me how to do that!

I place this one, right next to your previous best, Tumse Mil Kar. The lyrics, the vocals, the melody have merged beautifully. And the strings are the icing.
Reminds me of our Masterji’s grammar at school in Baramulla, over a half century ago, GOOD, GOODDER,GOODEST.

Hey,
dis is a beautiful sng. . .
n d lyrics r simply superb. Cntrast it to Atif’s jalpari where d song is gud, dfinitely, bt doesnt mean much. Even The most beautifully sung songs will be forgten if d lyrics r weak.
i found u on a google search page dat coincidntly led to my blog too. .
you hv done a gr8 job
Keep going !

Thanks for coming by Almas. I too had discovered Atif’s song after recording my song while doing some web search for Jalpari. Although I have never heard the song, but the lyrics were very ordinary. Of course, no comparison, since I wrote my song as a Nazm and not as a popular song

This is wonderful!
Just one comment…your pronunciation…your “J” sound sounds like a “CH” sometimes. “J” has to come from within your chest, but “CH” stays only in your mouth. It’s pretty easy to kind of mix up the two…
