Last Thing On My Mind
September 7th, 2008
I was testing out a webcam today that I got at work and decided to record a famous folk song from the 60s called “Last thing on my mind”. I think the original was done by Tom Paxton sometime back in the 50s, but this is the Chad Mitchell Trio’s version, which was a major hit all across the US, especially college campuses during the 60s folk era. The quality is so-so. Enjoy!
Lyrics:
It’s a lesson too late for the learnin’
Made of sand, made of sand
In the wink of an eye my soul is turnin’
In your hand, in your hand.
Are you going away with no word of farewell?
Will there be not a trace left behind?
Well, I could have loved you better,
Didn’t mean to be unkind.
You know that was the last thing on my mind.
You’ve got reasons a-plenty for goin’.
This I know, this I know.
For the weeds have been steadily growin’.
Please don’t go, please don’t go.
As I lie in my bed in the mornin’,
Without you, without you.
Every song in my breast dies a bornin’,
Without you, without you.

Very well rendered.
The guitar tones tend to smother the vocals slightly, though.
But both sound so good, don’t know which one to punish to lower octave.
“Every song in my breast ( not heart )………….. ”
Is the second stanza repeated as many times in the original rendition?
The second stanza has surely the best lyrics.
Like when you bite a sweet juicy apple the second time.

Second stanza is the chorus verse, so it’s repeated during the song. The original song does have the word breast, but the Mitchell Trio used heart so I did the same. The original song has one more verse, which I omitted.

Departing of lovers leads to longing and craving in life. Well depicted song of love longing. It is perhaps the best way to give vent to your feeling of love as a sort of consolation needed for many!
