Wo Dilli Ki Galiyan (Delhi)
March 23rd, 2006
Here is a Ghazal I wrote back in November 2004. Sometimes I wonder what Delhi once was, and what filth people have turned it into in this time and age…
Peace~

Here’s the Roman form:
Kashti jo samandar me gar dubaaye koi
Bahe khooN na kyun jo dil ko yun sataaye koi
Maange hai jigar Mai to kabhi haay! sitam
Dil e barbaad ko yaaroN na ab rulaaye koi
Hui muddat ke is shahar me bhi gaati thi zameeN
Ye galee kooche me kabhi to sur milaaye koi
Ruswaa na ho ulfat o yakeeN kaa ye makaaN
Rodaad e mohabbat ko naa miTaaye koi
Aati hai yaad dar pe mere shaam o sahar
Ye ghazal likkhun mai yaa rab! gungunaaye koi
Kahaan wo Dilli ki galiaayn wo gul o baagh ‘Zafar’
Kabhi veeraane me bhi shamma ik jalaaye koi

Hey bro! nice blog. The only problem is that I can’t read diwangari, can you post some urdu, or atleast roman urdu so I can read this stuff? I’m a big fan of urdu sher o shairi, and really like gulzaar too ofcourse. But I can’t read any of it on your blog.

nice one zafar saab!
here is one by mr rahi masoom raza on the same topic( delhi-1958)
It reflects his feeling of loneliness and existential solitude
Is andhere ke sunsaan jungle mein, hum dagmagate rahe, muskurate rahe
Lau ki manind hum larkharate rahe, par qadam apne aage barhaate rahe
ajnabi shehar ke ajnabi raste, meri tanhae par mukurate rahe
mein bahut der tak yunhee chalta raha, tum bahut der tak yaad aate rahe
Kal kuch aisa hua mein bahut thak gaya, is liye sun ke bhi ansuni kar gaya
kitni yaadon ke bhatke hue karavaan, dil ke zakhmo ke dar khat khataate rahe
zahar milta raha, zahar peete rahe, roz marte rahe , roz jeete rahe
zindage bhi hamen aazmati rahi or hum bhi ise azmaate rahe
sakht haalat ke tez toofan mein, ghir gaya tha hamara junoone wafa
woh chiraage tamanna bujhaata rahe, hum chiraage tammana jalaate rahe
zakhm jab bhi koi mere dil par laga, zindagi ki taraf ek dareecha khula
hum bhi goya kisi saaz ke taar hai, chot khaate rahe , gungunaate rahe

This is a very special Ghazal to me. Actually my father, when he entered engineering college in the early 60s, he was not ragged because he sang this Ghazal for everyone.
Great one indeed :=)

I did not sing for everyone! Yes, for my seniors who were in the second year and had their first opportunity to rag freshers. I hit upon this idea after I was fed half a tube of my toothpaste on my second day at college. The word got around and then I happily latched on this ragging saving technique.

Delhi ki galiyon ki kashish bhi ek ajib cheej hai. In the modernity of the rail roads and the high traffic movement of the automobiles whoh yarana of the frolic wanderers of the street alone or with a friend is getting lost somewhere. Logo ki khusar phusar aur un ke kah kahe hawa main lut ke rah gai. Kahan woh Mirza Galib ki yadaien ya woh galion main guzrete kisi dawesh ke nasihati andaz, sub kuchh gum sum sa Diawaron se chipak kar rah gaya ya phir kahin kisi ka ansoo ban ke vah gaya.
